Let’s Talk Feet!

Let’s Talk Feet!

Did you know that your foot (yes just one of them) contains 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments? That may seem like a lot in a relatively small package, but then again, your feet have the very important task of supporting the entire body.  Considering the average adult takes approximately 10,000 steps a day, feet come under an enormous amount of pressure and stress.

Your feet are probably the most neglected part of your body, often given little or no thought and yet every day you expect them to perform amazing feats for you (pun intended). Most people take their importance of their feet for granted and it is not until problems occur that you may consider getting them checked. How often have you said to yourself “my feet are killing me”? The truth is your feet will take you the equivalent of 5 times around the world! That is a LOT of walking. So when there is an issue with your feet it can change how you are able to accomplish daily life tasks, hobbies and sports/activities.

As the foundation of our body, an issue in the feet can also greatly affected other areas; back pain that never seems to go away, knee pain that happens when we increase our activity, even headaches can be caused by issues starting in the feet. This is why a proper foot and gait scan is so important.  By assessing any dysfunction in how the feet move and support the body we can help to alleviate other pain complaints.

But it’s not only about how they function.  There are many other aspects of foot care that may need to be addressed; such as toe nail health, corns and callouses, plantar warts and diabetic related issues. Taking care of problems with your feet is as important as looking after any other part of your body.  Whatever the cause of your pain or discomfort, it’s never wise to just ignore the symptoms. They rarely disappear, and in many instances will only grow worse as time passes.
