Orthotics

Our feet consist of 26 bones (in each foot), held in place by many ligaments, tendons and muscles. Our feet are designed to support our body weight, absorb shock, and provide leverage when walking or running. When our feet hurt, this fine balance of ligaments, tendons and muscles may be off balance.

At some point in time, over 80% of the population will have some problem with their feet, ankles, knees, hips or even their back. Orthotics are custom-made devices which help to hold our feet in a more stable position. They can help to provide a stable platform from which these joints can better function. They are worn in our shoes to provide support during times of work, rest or play.

How do I know if I need them?

Generally speaking, if you have problems such as; arch pain, heel pain, fatigue, or even corns and calluses, it may indicate a misalignment in your foot structure. Orthotics may help in providing support or correction for a foot abnormality.

What type of orthotics are the best?

Prescription orthotics are based on many different factors such as: weight, activity level, type of shoe or activity for which the orthotics are designed.

  • We address abnormalities in your gait cycle (Walking Patterns) and look at correction or compensation of these abnormalities. We also address structural problems such as; leg length discrepancies and left/right weight imbalance, as well as foot abnormalities.

Prescription orthotics are based on many different factors such as: weight, activity level, type of shoe or activity for which the orthotics are designed. They should only be used as an adjunct to proper assessment and treatment. They are often covered under an extended health insurance through yours or your spouse’s work place.
